As one of the best ways to transform your under deck area into a dry and enjoyable outdoor living space, the UpSide Deck Ceiling by Color Guard employs functional and attractive channels to give your ceiling a classic bead board appearance while effectively draining water safely away from your home.
But the drainage aspect of the simple 6-part system won’t work without one thing: proper flashing.
“Flashing is really the most important prep thing you can do, that we require before installing our system,” said Kyle Blindauer, Color Guard’s resident installation expert. “That’s one of the key things to making this system work and to keeping water from going down your wall or going anywhere outside of the system – it’s that flashing right at the ledger board.”
During a recent webinar, Color Guard’s Blindauer and Troy Neas talked about the importance of flashing and why it needs to be completed before you begin installing UpSide.
“Obviously, the really big issue is getting this getting this thing sealed and ready for the installation of our system,” Neas said.
According to Neas, there are a number of different ways to install flashing, something we cover in the video below, but no matter what type of flashing you use it must be installed between joists extending a minimum of 8″ from the ledger board to assure proper channeling of any water away from the house and into the channels.
We also recommend that the sides of the flashing be caulked to prevent leakage.
