Tips & FAQs:

Will aluminum railing rust?2021-12-17T17:57:27+00:00

Because of the properties of aluminum, it should not rust. Plus, our products are coated to resist corrosion.

Can I install railing into a concrete patio?2021-12-17T17:55:57+00:00

Yes. If your concrete patio doesn’t already have rails built in, we recommend using Patriot Post Mount.

Installation is basically the same as installing it into a normal wood deck, except that you will be drilling into concrete – https://www.colorguardrailing.com/patriot-post-mount-installation/.

For this, you will need a masonry drill bit.

What’s a post vs. post sleeve?2021-12-17T17:51:56+00:00

A post is a structural element of the deck, usually made from pressure treated wood or metal. It could also be a post mounting system like Patriot Post Mount.

A post sleeve is a vinyl or aluminum covering that slips over the post to give it a certain look. It is purely for aesthetics and has no structural qualities.

Can Post Wrap be painted?2021-11-24T19:50:38+00:00

We do not recommend painting our product as we have not done any testing regarding that process.

Some installers have reported painting Post Wrap with a 100% acrylic bonding primer and a water-based finish coat. But, again, we have not tested this and would not recommend painting.

We recommend going to your local paint store and asking for their input.

Painting products could void any warranty.

Are caps and collars available for the 2×4 vinyl post sleeve?2021-11-24T19:38:19+00:00

Color guard does make a 2×4 vinyl post sleeve, available in white, tan, and clay.

However, we do not manufacture a cap or collar for that sleeve.

How do you install the post wrap?2021-11-24T19:17:00+00:00

Smooth and Flutted 4”, 6” & 8” Post Wrap installs easily in several steps. To install you will need:

  • Measuring tape
  • PVC Cement (optional)
  • Saw with a fine tooth blade
  • Hammer
  • Roofing nails recommended
  • Safety Goggles recommended

Step 1Measure and Cut Post Wrap:
Measure the length of Post Wrap needed and cut to length using a fine tooth saw.

Step 2Attach Post Wrap
Place the first piece of Post Wrap against the post and fasten using roofing nails through holes provided on the fastening flange. Insert the flat end of the second piece of Post Wrap into the assembly slot of the first piece. Again, attach to the post using roofing nails in the holes provided on the fastening flange. Repeat the previous step to fasten the third piece of Post Wrap. Do not nail tight.

Step 3Complete Installation
When attaching the last piece of Post Wrap, once again begin by inserting the flat end into the assembly slot of the previous piece. Next, slide the slot of the fourth piece over the flat end of the first piece. In most applications the Post Wrap will be secure, but PVC Cement may be used. Trim post with Adjustable Post Collar, sold separately.

Is the Patriot Steel Post Mount able to be screwed onto composite decking?2022-04-20T19:18:34+00:00

The Patriot Post Mount can be installed into wood, concrete or composite surfaces. That said, we do not suggest securing the Patriot to deck boards alone. We recommend using a pair of 2x8s on their side attached to the deck framework as blocking so that the post is being secured to something more structurally sound that just the deck board

We also do have the SPB Kit/Underdeck Anchoring Plate available for added stability. You can find that here.

How do I level the Patriot Steel Post Mount?2022-04-20T19:18:41+00:00

The Patriot Post Mount can be leveled up to 11 degrees in any direction. To do this, secure the post with the fastening screws, but don’t tighten all the way yet because the post still needs to be leveled.

Next, adjust the leveling screws until it is in the desired position. Once level, secure the four fasteners.

Do I need a different filler for a 44-inch sleeve when installing the Patriot 4×4 Steel Post Mount?2022-04-20T19:19:00+00:00

You use the same filler for both the 36- and 44-inch sleeves.

Using the pre-drilled holes, attach the fillers. For a 36-inch post sleeve, attach the fillers in the downward direction.

To install a 44-inch Sleeve, simply attach the fillers in the upward direction.
