Code Compliance

Color Guard® railing systems meet both the 2009 International Building Code® (IBC) and 2009 International Residential Code® (IRC). Rigourous testing by a third party testing agency, ATI Evaluation Service, ensures that our product not only meets your local building codes, but creates a safe environment for you and your family.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do vinyl railing systems meet national building codes?

CG vinyl railing systems are engineered to meet and exceed most national building code requirements for residential dwellings and have been tested by an independent laboratory. The industry requires vinyl railing to be tested to the AC174 testing standard. Once tested and independently certified all product labeling must include the testing information. Will vinyl railings discolor or chalk over time?

While any exterior product is subject to some level of  fading/chalking, Color Guard® uses only the highest quality materials in its extrusions and manufacturing process. We use 100% virgin vinyl containing TiO2 (titanium dioxide) which limits fading and discoloring of our products.

What is virgin vinyl?

This is the term used for vinyl products that do not contain recycled products. Recycled products that may be imported into an extrusion plant may contain impurities or lower grade vinyl which can seriously affect the finished product’s resilience, impact resistance and UV inhibition.

Can I paint vinyl railing?

Color Guard® does not recommend painting vinyl railings. Although there are paints available to do so, painting or treating Color Guard® products voids the Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Can I buy replacement parts, or must I buy an entire new section?

Yes, replacement parts are available to purchase separately. Contact your local dealer or lumberyard for part numbers.

How do I attach the post caps?

Caps can be secured to the posts using PVC glue or a silicone adhesive.

Can a section of railing be cut down to fit a narrower opening?

Our ezTECHTM installation features simplified this process. Sections can be easily cut down and, with an additional bracket kit, can become two railing sections. However, it is important to cut the rail equally from both ends. This will ensure that the baluster spacing remains even between the end baluster and the post.

What do I use to cut the vinyl?

Vinyl railing can be cut with most saw types. A power miter saw is the most widely used along with a 10″ 80 tooth carbide tip blade.

How should I clean vinyl railing?

As with all exterior products, vinyl will become dirty when exposed to the elements. For normal cleaning, water and a non-abrasive cleaner will work. If you encounter a more stubborn stain, a magic eraser or a power washer can be used. We recommend that the power washer be used on a low setting.

How does vinyl railing up hold up in cold weather?

In cold weather vinyl will become less flexible. However, unless subjected to unusual impact, it will not break or crack. In hot weather, it will maintain its rigidity. All materials expand and contract with temperature changes. Color Guard® products have been engineered for swings in temperature.

Why are vinyl rails so expensive?

While wood can seem less expensive initially, over the lifetime of the product not only will you save time, but money as well. Vinyl railing does not need sanding, painting or scraping. Whereas wood railing must be maintained year after year. Vinyl railing is virtually maintenance-free…no painting, treating or sealing. Just time to enjoy.

What is the Limited Lifetime Warranty?

Color Guard® vinyl products are warranted to be free from manufacturing defects that result in peeling, flaking, cracking or extreme amounts of fading or bleaching under conditions of normal use and service for the life of the product. This warranty is extended to the original purchaser only. To view the entire warranty, click here.
